Is It OK if I Interrupt Right Here?

Why is it that we think it’s ok to interrupt someone but find it annoying when someone interrupts you?

When you interrupt someone, it is rude and shows them that you really were not listening to them. Very few people enjoy being interrupted or knowing that what they said was not heard.

Honestly, we have been doing it since we were kids. Children feel that they have to interject whatever crosses their minds. And that trait carries over to adulthood. It is a habit that becomes stronger the more we do it. And that means that it will take time to break the habit, but the benefits far outweigh the efforts.

Think of yourself as a learner because that is what we all should be. When you are trying to learn something, you pay close attention and try to soak in as much information as you can. Treat others like that. Listen attentively. Listen and don’t let your mind focus on what you want to say next while listening. You will have plenty of time to think and respond.

Of course, we sometimes interrupt without meaning to interrupt. The other person seems to be ending their remarks. There is a long pause. So you speak. But if you realize that they were not through, apologize and let them finish; THEN speak.

However, most of the time we interrupt without thinking about it because it is natural to us. My friend, please recognize this and start the process of NOT interrupting.

Like I stated above, it takes time to break the habit, but it is worth it. People will want to talk with you. People will see that you value them. And that tends to help them want to listen to you in turn.
