Most people realize that reading is important, but many simply do not read even though is it a great way to relax and learn. Reading enables you to learn new skills, ideas, and viewpoints. It is something that we all should be doing.

What many do not realize is that reading itself is a skill. It is something that you CAN do, but you must choose to do it. Consider the following ideas to become a regular reader…

Reading Tip 1 – Choose a topic that interests you. If you are going to make a habit out of reading, start with something that you will enjoy. Changing habits is hard, so try to at least enjoy it.

Reading Tip 2 – Challenge yourself. Most of us seem to thrive o challenges, so set up you own reading challenges. Start with a challenge to read a certain number of pages each day, and move to reading a certain number of books each year.

Reading Tip 3 – Audio books are ok. Some people may not consider audio books to be “true” reading, but we are talking about you. Listening to audio books is technically not reading, but it is a great way to take in information. You can listen while driving or doing chores and increase your knowledge.

Reading Tip 4 – eBooks are ok. Again, some people think that you must read from a physical book. Physical books are wonderful, but their information also lies in eBooks. You can save a lot of physical space in your home by owning some eBooks, and you have access to many more books than a typical library would have.

Reading Tip 5 – Log your reading. Keeping a list of the books that you read helps motivate you to keep reading. As the list grows, your excitement over your accomplishments will spur you forward. Also, you can include a list of books that you want to read in the future, so you do not miss any.

Reading Tip 6 – Set a time to read. Since many people claim that they do not have the time to read, fix it by setting a time for reading. If you take the time to do this, you may be surprised at how easy it is to find the time.

Reading Tip 7 – Be comfortable. Reading is important, so you need to make sure that you can read comfortably. Pick a place. Pick a chair. Setup the lighting. You’ll be glad that you did.

Reading Tip 8 – Do not focus on finishing. Many of us have an urge to finish what we start. However, we are talking about becoming a reader and not necessarily a book finisher. The simple truth is that some books will not interest you. It is more important to keep reading books than finishing one that bores you silly.

Reading Tip 9 – Get in a book club. We all know that accountability enables you to do more. The same is true with reading. Knowing that you will be discussing the book that you are supposed to read will encourage you to read it. And you may enjoy the social interaction of the group, too.

So – start implementing these tips today. There is no better time to start than now.
