Throughout our lives, we desire happiness.  And one of the major things that affect our happiness is our connection to other people – namely our friendships.  This is one of the important aspects of having friends in your life.

Let’s take a few moments to think about how friendships affect our happiness.

Happiness is tied to how sociable one is.

Studies have shown that those who are sociable are often happier.

As people get older, it becomes harder and harder to find new friends and meet people as we do when we are children.  However, it is still possible and necessary.

Living isolated lives makes it easier to face stress and depression.  Whether one finds it hard to be social or not, it is important and needed.  It also is important to build deep connections.

Stress and depression are lowered through friendships.

Relying on other people to lift yourself up helps us lesson the effects of stress and depression.  Having someone to whom you can talk about problems and worries helps you become less negative while feeling less lonely.  Their concern and care is a precious thing.

This works in reverse as well.  If your friends comes to you for help and a listening ear, it increases your happiness as you realize that you have helped someone else.

Being positive affects those around you.

Just as a smile causes others to smile, happiness is contagious.  We reflect the mood of those who are close to us.  This is why we need friends that we can count on.

You need to honestly evaluate the kind of people who are your friends.  If they are positive, they will be a blessing.  If they are negative, they will pull you down.

Also, be the kind of person that you want in your own life.  It will uplift others, and that will uplift you.

Friends give you the support that you need.

A good friend wants what is best for you, and they will do whatever they can to help you.  We may not always want to hear what they say, but a good friend is going to tell you what you need to hear.

Your happiness is tied to your friendships.  Be a good friend to others.  Build strong friendships with those who can help you.  It is worth it.
